about

End Of Numbers -

Meg says: This is the first song Findlay and I wrote together on an EFDSS retreat in Snape Maltings (yes thats a real place). It’s about the mathematician Georg Cantor desperately trying to prove his theory of infinity and the madness that descended upon him when nobody believed him. Findlay claims to understand set theory and the infinity of infinity, I struggle with simple multiplication.

Fin says: Another radio show/podcast inspired song. I’ve convinced myself that I heard about Georg Cantor from Marcus Du Satoy’s Radio 4 show A Brief History of Mathematics. The bit that stuck out was that before Cantor a theory existed that there was an end of numbers. I loved that idea. A group of scientist finding the last number and one of them going, “Well chaps… What do we do now?” Another lab coat timidly raisies a hand and offers, “Could we try counting back the way now?” And the sound of all of them banging their heads on the raised science desks in unison.

A week before writing this a very patient maths teacher explained Set Theory to me at a kids birthday party in Fun Fun Wonderland Screaming Lollipop Hell Tears World in East Kilbride. I would find explaining the theory very tricky without the accompaniment of all the children of East Kilbride screaming in a windowless warehouse of enforced fun. I do believe in infinity (to the depths of my soul) so feel free try me.

lyrics

The End of Numbers

The end of numbers that fiction I fight
They argue and bicker over whether I’m right
Call me a renegade corrupt the young
As I lay in my grave, the evidence lives on

I believe in infinity decimals roll
I believe in infinity, never grows old
Endless possibility beyond our control
I believe in infinity, paradise unfolds

The end of numbers my god given right
He sent me to tell you there’s no end in sight
They giggle in ignorance their ordinary view
My method, my madness, my cardinal truth

I believe in infinity decimals roll
I believe in infinity, never grows old
Endless possibility beyond our control
I believe in infinity, paradise unfolds

Infinity of infinity
It sounds like a prayer
an unbroken cycle
layer upon layer

Last of my letters from locked up inside
The facts and the figures are boundless in size
They’ve run out numbers to count down my days
There’s no end to numbers so I’ll slip away

I believe in infinity decimals roll
I believe in infinity, never grows old
Endless possibility beyond our control
I believe in infinity
I believe in infinity decimals roll
I believe in infinity, never grows old
Endless possibility beyond our control
I believe in infinity, paradise unfolds

about

Megan Henwood & Findlay Napier UK

Oxford's Megan Henwood and Glasgow's Findlay Napier met on a songwriting retreat at Snape Maltings, Aldeburgh in 2016.

“Fancy writing a song about maths?” Napier enquired. And so the seed for the Story Song Scientists was sewn.

They have toured this EP across the UK and their 2nd EP will be released alongside their November 2021 tour.
